Thanks to funding from Active South Somerset, two new classes in Milborne Port and South Petherton have been set up to keep South Somerset residents active.

The Active South Somerset programme is aimed at improving opportunities for activities in the South Somerset District. Active Somerset helps with funding during a 12 week pilot session of the class.

In Milborne Port Village Hall, a new Core & Flexibility class has started every Monday from 5.30pm – 6.30pm. Instructor Martyn Powell said, “It is great to see the people of Milborne Port getting involved in a class that’s easy to do. This is an ideal class to improve your flexibility and overall strength. The class is structured with a warm up, then circuit stations working on strengthening and toning exercises then finished with some flexibility exercises”.

In South Petherton, a new Tai Chi Shibashi Qigong class has also started every Wednesday from 2pm – 3pm at The David Hall. Malcolm Norton who has just started the new class said, “Tai Chi Shibashi has been great to work on my upper body to loosen up stiff joints and muscles”.

There are many new classes starting in South Somerset thanks to funding from Active South Somerset. Many of the classes are easy to attend due to being in community buildings. The first session on any class is free of charge.

Councillor Sylvia Seal, Portfolio Holder for Leisure & Culture said, “We have seen a large increase of new groups set up in smaller communities thanks to funding from Active South Somerset. Our staff at the District Council help to set up groups, offer advice and signpost residents to their nearest group. We are pleased to see more and more groups popping up across South Somerset to help keep residents active”.
