Gardeners recreate Jekyll planting scheme for Victorian Terrace

IMG_3504The gardeners at Hestercombe have been busily emptying one of the flower beds around the balustrade of the Victorian Terrace, but don’t panic, it’s all to ensure the original planting schemes designed by Gertrude Jekyll, are followed. The plants that have been taken out are a mix of fuchsias, penstemon and roses, which were planted in the 1970s by Somerset County Council. Call for information over missing historic wellhead

Wellhead AppealInformation concerning an historic wellhead, thought to be an early example of Venetian Byzantine, is being sought by Hestercombe Gardens, near Taunton in Somerset. The wellhead was originally placed in the Formal Garden at Hestercombe by the Hon Mr and Mrs Portman in 1904. It was later noted in two of the four pre-war articles that were written on Hestercombe by Country Life in 1927. Full story: Read more

Big Bird Watch 0116Here at Hestercombe we work hard at maintaining our beautiful gardens and attracting wildlife. And with the RSPB 2016 Big Garden Birdwatch taking place across the weekend of January 30-31, we hope our visitors will help us spot the birds in the gardens and let the RSPB know about your findings. The Big Garden Birdwatch is the world’s largest wildlife survey and the results that members of the public submit are vital in helping conservationists target their efforts towards the vulnerable wildlife that is counting on us for its survival.
