Councillors of South Somerset District Council’s District Executive Committee have voted in favour of giving serious consideration to taking over the running of the Westlands Sports and Leisure Complex in Yeovil. At yesterday’s meeting, the Members of District Executive Committee agreed to look fully at the possibility of taking on the management of the complex which is currently owned by Finmeccanica – AgustaWestland and is scheduled to close at the end of this month. Exhibition to celebrate the centenary of the founding of Westland Aircraft Works
From 24 July 2015 there will be a display in the Town House, Union Street, Yeovil to celebrate the centenary of the founding of the Westland Aircraft Works. The display has been organised by South Somerset District Council’s Community Heritage Access Centre and a free booklet can also be obtained on the history of the founding from the Town House and Yeovil Library in King George Street. Finmeccanica-AgustaWestland Celebrates 100 Years of Aircraft Manufacturing in the UK
Finmeccanica-AgustaWestland is celebrating the centenary of the formation of the Westland Aircraft Works in Yeovil and the many aeronautical achievements that have been made during 100 years of continuous aircraft manufacturing on the site. Established in 1915 Westland has produced many famous fixed wing aircraft designs such as the Whirlwind, Welkin, Wapiti, Lysander before focussing on helicopter production and later on its own designs such as the Lynx and AW101.
