South Somerset residents among the first in the country to get Swim Fit ready for summer

swimfit 3Swimmers in South Somerset will become some of the first in the UK to try the new Swimfit Activate+ group sessions which have been developed by swimming experts at the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA).

Emily Taylor, Aquatic Officer for Dorset & Somerset at the ASA South West, explained more about the sessions: “Swimfit is a revolutionary swimming programme suitable for all swimming abilities and is designed to help people get more out of their time in the pool”.

“Inspired by the structure of a gym programme, Swimfit is a fun and effective way to get fit and tone up by following 30 progressive motivating session cards either in an instructor led session or during your normal swim.”

Swimfit will launch at Goldenstones Leisure Centre from Monday 15th April and is being championed by South Somerset District Council. Charlie Coward, Healthy Lifestyles Officer at SSDC said:  “The results from our workplace health survey revealed that over two-thirds of employees would be interested in using Goldenstones during lunchtimes. The majority of these people wanted to see Swimfit sessions and I am delighted that through working closely with Goldenstones and the ASA we have reached this very positive outcome.”

Ed Hamblett, Leisure Manager of Goldenstones Leisure Centre said: “We are delighted to offer this particular session. Swimming has always been recognised as a way to get fit and stay fit, for everyone as the water acts as the support.

“SwimFit means Goldenstones Leisure Centre can offer coached sessions to help people achieve improve stroke technique, health and improve water confidence. Sessions run Monday mornings 7am – 7.45am and Thursday afternoons from 12:15 – 1pm.”

Cllr Sylvia Seal, portfolio holder for Leisure and Culture at South Somerset District Council added: “Having listened to employees we have helped to offer them what they asked for. These sessions should prove to be a fun way to improve fitness levels. Our Healthy Workplace programme aims to create an innovative low cost way of introducing workplaces into healthy living and more active lifestyles.”
