Popular monthly market takes place this weekend

The popular Shepton Mallet Sunday Market takes place this weekend in the historic market town in Somerset.

Shepton Sunday markets were hugely popular in 2017 and last month saw the first monthly market of 2018 take place.

Shepton Sunday market see artisan traders selling a wide range of produce, crafts and gifts fill the market place in Shepton Mallet. Shoppers and attendees also have the opportunity to have a drink and a bite to eat while enjoying the atmosphere and live music. The markets which are run by Mendip District Council are also supported heavily by Shepton Town Council and the local community.

Cllr Nigel Taylor, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood and Community Health Services, said: “It’s great to see Shepton Mallet town centre busy with stalls, visitors and shoppers. Markets can bring economic benefits to a town and also create a very positive community spirit too.”

The monthly markets which will be situated in the Market Place in the centre of Shepton Mallet will run from 10am to 3pm.

Next month’s Shepton Mallet Sunday Market taking place on 20 May will be supporting the ‘Love Your Local Market’ campaign ‘Close to Your Heart’.

Now in its 7th year, the annual initiative grew out of the Portas review in 2012 as a one-day event. Today the campaign has grown to become a global campaign with over 3000 events taking place in 17 countries in 2018. This year’s Love Your Local Market theme is ‘Close to Your Heart’. Between 17th and 31st May, 3,000 events will showcase innovation, celebrating heritage, culture, produce, crafts and food. There will also be opportunities for new traders and enterprise initiatives encouraging young enterprise.
