Park Yoga has come to Yeovil – Join in at Yeovil Country Park

Park Yoga has come to Yeovil this summer following its success in various locations across the South West over the last two years.

Organisers have decided to expand Park Yoga and open a new location at Yeovil Country Park for people in and around Yeovil to enjoy.

Park Yoga at Yeovil Country Park is a great way to exercise and feel the benefits that are experienced by the body and mind.

If you are looking to experience yoga for the first time, try a new class or just enjoy practicing in natural surroundings then Park Yoga is for you. Park Yoga is held every Sunday morning from 9.30am to 10.30am. The free sessions started on 19th May and will continue throughout the summer until September.

Rachael Whaites, Countryside Manager at South Somerset District Council, said: “We are very excited to be a new host for Park Yoga. Connecting people to their local greenspace, whether through education, volunteering, events or fitness has always been an important aim of the countryside team. The benefits of yoga are already well documented but when you couple that with a connection to the natural environment, surrounded by birds singing and the trees rustling, the benefits are doubled. I would highly recommend coming to the country park and giving it a go.”

Park Yoga Yeovil is supported by South Somerset District Council and The Fine Family Foundation. The Fine Family Foundation is funding the community project and support charitable bodies working in the environment, the arts, education and health.

Sibyl King, Director at the Fine Family Foundation, said: “Everyone is invited, including children, and all abilities are welcome. There’s no need to book; just bring your mat, towel or just yourself, and be part of something great.”

Katie Burden, Administrator at the Fine Family Foundation, added: “We have seen Park Yoga grow in popularity over the last two years and are excited to be able to bring free outdoor yoga sessions to new locations for 2019. We hope that Park Yoga Yeovil is just as successful and encourages both people that are new to yoga and those that regularly practice to improve their health and wellbeing in natural surroundings.”

Park Yoga are excited to be working with local yoga instructor Rachael Gillies who will be providing these free classes which are suitable for all ages and abilities. Speaking about the opportunity to bring yoga to people in and around Yeovil, Rachael said: “I have been practicing yoga myself for 18 years and the benefits that are experienced by the body and mind are incredible, I want to share this with everyone! I am so impressed with the turn out we have had so far. It’s wonderful to see so many people coming out and trying yoga in the beautiful setting of Yeovil Country Park. It’s the perfect start to your Sunday and I hope you all feel strong, balanced and fully relaxed by the end of the session.”

Councillor Mike Best, Portfolio Holder for Health & Well-Being at South Somerset District Council, said: “One of the Council’s key areas of focus for 2019/20 is to work with partners to support people in improving their own physical and mental health and wellbeing. Park Yoga really does offer this and as Rachael says, there are benefits for the body and mind. We’ve already seen hundreds of people come to the first few sessions and have received great feedback for us providing this in South Somerset.”
