A brand new football session is bringing together people of all ages and abilities to play the game in Yeovil.
Sam Wenden-de-Lira from the Healthy Lifestyles Team at the district council explains more about walking football. “The game is exactly the same as regular football, except you are not allowed to run. The benefit of walking is a reduced impact on joints, making it perfect for those returning from injury, older adults or those who have had a break from activity.
“Initially we set up ‘taster’ sessions to gauge interest and it is now running on a weekly basis. Walking football takes place on Tuesdays, 6pm – 7pm at Bucklers Mead Sports Hall and the best news is that the first session is free.”
Sion Kitson, Football Development Officer at Somerset F.A said, “Walking football is ideal for those who love the game but are unable to play full impact football. Walking ensures everyone is on a level playing field, no matter the age, ability or predisposition to injury.
“We are hoping to attract more people to play in order for us to continue running these sessions which are extremely beneficial and very much enjoyed by those taking part already.”
One of the participants, Simon Cox, explains why he enjoys the sessions, “As someone unable to play the full game of football anymore it’s nice to have been able to find an alternative that still provides an enjoyable football experience and a good workout. This format certainly tests your ability on key aspects of the game particularly movement and passing football. For anyone looking to get back into playing the game I advise them to give walking football a go as they will be pleasantly surprised how enjoyable it is.”
Cllr Sylvia Seal, who holds the Leisure and Culture portfolio for South Somerset District Council added, “Working in partnership with Somerset F.A and Bucklers Mead Sports Centre has enabled us to offer this innovative session locally. We are dedicated to offering a variety of affordable activities that are easy to access for local residents and I hope these sessions go from strength to strength.”
