National Voter Registration Day is coming – Are you ready to vote?

VRL03 02-02-15Thursday 5th February 2015 celebrates National Voter Registration Day, a day that launches a week of activities across the nation by the Electoral Commission to encourage as many people as possible to register to vote.

As the countdown to the General and Local Elections on Thursday 7 May 2015 begins, residents of South Somerset are being encouraged to make sure they are on the Electoral Register.

On Thursday 7th May, elections will be taking place in South Somerset for the Members of Parliament for the Yeovil and Somerton & Frome constituencies. On the same day, elections will be held for the 60 seats on South Somerset District Council and for the 102 Town and Parish Councils within the district.

To coincide with National Voter Registration Day, SSDC has sent a Household Notification to each household in the district which lists the names of people registered. The notification will also advise how any non-registered residents can register.

In 2014 Individual Electoral Registration (IER) was introduced. It’s a big, important change that will let everyone take responsibility for their own vote. In addition, for the first time ever, people are now able to register online.

If you are entitled to be on the Electoral Register but are not currently, you can register by going to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

The registration deadline for the general election and local government election is Monday 20 April 2015.
