Langport Welfare Benefits Surgery set to open

SSDCA welfare benefits ‘drop-in’ surgery is set to open to the public in Langport on Tuesday 29 October. It’s an opportunity for residents to drop in and seek advice or speak with a Welfare Advice Officer.

The surgery has been organised by South Somerset District Council so that residents can check what benefits they may be entitled to, receive help in applying and review “what if” calculations if their circumstances change. Appointments can be made on request by calling 01935 462462 and asking for a referral to the Welfare Benefits team or by visiting our SSDC local offices.

The Surgery will be held at the The Angel in Langport, which was purchased by Langport Community Church trust with the intention of creating a welcoming and accepting public space in the heart of Langport, where a range of activities and facilities will be available to all. The main downstairs area has already been renovated and developed into the café and there are a wide variety of activities and community groups who already use the Angel as a base.

The surgery will be held every other Tuesday, first one will be held on Tuesday 29th October. It runs between 10.30am and 12.30pm.

Councillor Ric Pallister, Leader of South Somerset District Council and Portfolio Holder for Housing said, “The number of people visiting our regular Welfare Benefits surgery in other local towns demonstrates that there is an on-going demand for the advice that we can offer through this face to face service.

“Given the significant changes in every kind of Welfare Benefit this year, the need for professional advice is greater now than probably ever before. We do encourage anyone to take advantage of this service as some of these changes are pretty complex and it often helps to be able to talk it through with an expert.”

This service is on offer to the whole of South Somerset in addition to the local surgeries. Clients wishing to access advice can make contact with Support Officers via the main council telephone number 01935 462462 or at any of our community offices around the district.
