Saturday shoppers in Yeovil will have a unique opportunity to pop their bags down and try one of a host of different sports when the Join In Local Sport event takes place in the Quedam Shopping Centre on Saturday 27 July.
Join In is a national celebration of sport and is being coordinated locally by the Sports Development Team at South Somerset District Council in partnership with local sports clubs and the Quedam Shopping Centre.
Whether it’s shooting hoops, serving aces or attempting handstands there will be something for everyone at Join In.
Jake Hannis, Senior Sports and Healthy Lifestyles Officer at South Somerset District Council explained the idea of Join In. “We were keen to build on the success of the first event last year when hundreds of people tried out new sports and had a lot of fun in the process.”
“Join In is a celebration of grassroots sports and the supervised, multi-sport taster sessions will be family orientated and beginner friendly. Sports will include Tennis, Basketball, Boxing, Gymnastics, Disability Sport and even Orienteering! Everyone is welcome to just turn up and play. This will be a unusual chance for you to go shopping, try out a few sports and then do some more shopping!”
Councillor Sylvia Seal, Portfolio Holder for Leisure & Culture at South Somerset District Council, says:
“The aim of Join In is to encourage people to help out at sports clubs and community groups around the UK. After the encouraging turn out last year I hope that people will come along again in their numbers to try out new sports and find out about local opportunities for participating.”
