Illumina – NIGHT TIME MAGIC at Hestercombe Gardens
September 7th,8th, 9th and 14th,15th and 16th.
Over two long weekends in September the world famous Hestercombe Gardens,
near Taunton, in Somerset will be transformed with a web of unique, artistic, light
focused installations. Turn off your mind, relax and become engrossed in the subtle
imagery incorporating the natural surroundings.
Included amongst the installations at ‘Illumina’ will be a giant projection across a
lake, ethereal smoke projections in the Orangery, an animated neon sculpture in the
Grade One listed garden and psychedelic projections on the imposing Hestercombe
House.
The hauntingly captivating installations will be created by world renowned, Bristol
based artist, Ulf Pedersen, famed for his work with Power Plant, a ground breaking
event involving 5 artists who have set up light and sound based interventions in
various botanical gardens, including Durham and Edinburgh as well as staging sell
out exhibitions at Arts Festivals in Sydney, Hong King and Hobart.
Pedersen will be going solo for Hestercombe’s ‘Illumina,’ it’s the ideal place for him
to showcase his enchanting talents combining hi and low-fi technologies including
photographic lenticular technology, to highlight the poetic potential of this renowned
garden. Key amongst Ulf’s armoury of skills is the use of digital and slide projection
utilised to give, in many instances, an entirely different interpretation to every day
outdoor objects:
“It’s a terrific opportunity for me to showcase my work in such a stunning landscape.
Its diversity from wild woodland to formal gardens make this an interesting, yet
exciting space to illuminate. It’s a privilege for me to be following in the footsteps
of Jekyll & Lutyen’s, trying to visualize how they perceived this landscape when
designing these gardens, yet transforming them into a space they perhaps never
envisaged.
Creating a show, like Illumina, on such a large scale will be no small feat, it will
involve miles of cabling and low level LED lighting to link the route between features
and meticulous planning, masterminded, Chief Executive of the Hestercombe
Gardens Trust (a charity) is optimistic about the event:
‘It is ambitious, but last year’s one off night time event was so successful we know
that this will be popular and hope as many visitors as possible will join us to witness
what will be a memorable spectacle. The historic gardens are glorious in their own
right, but Ulf’s work will add a new dimension to them and to come at night will be
magical.’
