First for Somerset charity as ‘School in a Bag’ reaches South America

SchoolBags-reach-South-AmericaThe ‘School in a Bag’ charity initiative is celebrating a significant landmark as its first delivery of SchoolBags has reached South America. The 32 SchoolBags were delivered to street children living in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in a ‘first’ for the Somerset-based initiative that delivers rucksacks full of stationery, learning resources and eating utensils to poor, vulnerable and disaster affected children around the world. TEACHER INSPIRES FUTURE ECO-PIONEERS

TranzEcoPupilsJust as famous Langport resident Walter Bagehot inspired generations of political and economic thinkers, so one teacher at a Somerset school aims to inspire generations of eco-pioneers. Huish Episcopi Academy textiles teacher Catherine Robertson this Spring screened Susan Beraza’s Bag It (2010) film to more than 250 pupils in Year 9 as part of a long-standing course in making canvas eco-bags. Charity joins call for ‘talking buses’

Jonathan HolyheadPassengers with sight loss struggle with bus services. Dorset people living with sight loss are missing vital appointments because they have difficulty travelling by bus. In an effort to make bus travel less difficult for its members Dorset Blind Association is backing a campaign to introduce audio announcements on buses to indicate bus routes, destinations and next stops. “For people with sight loss properly accessible bus travel is vital to help them maintain independent and active lives,” says Dorset Blind Association chief executive officer Jonathan Holyhead.
