Free Tennis Served up across South Somerset

With tennis fever set to grip the nation during the summer, tennis clubs across South Somerset and Yeovil Recreation Centre are opening their doors over three weekends and offering free tennis taster sessions.

Free tennis will be available on 16th/17th May, 13th/14th June and 1st/2nd August. The initiative by the Lawn Tennis Association is part of the Great British Tennis Weekend, which will see over 1,500 park sites and tennis clubs across the country open up for free.

Jake Hannis, Senior Sports and Healthy Lifestyles Officer at South Somerset District Council explains more about the Great British Tennis Weekend, “Wimbledon always sees interest in tennis soar and we want to offer everyone an opportunity to try the sport free of charge in a welcoming environment.

“It’s easy to take part, just visit the Great British Tennis Weekend website, choose a location and day near you and then book a slot. Clubs and facilities will provide all the equipment and absolutely anyone can get involved.”

Yeovil Recreation Centre, Yeovil, Queen Camel, Ilminster and Somerton Tennis Clubs have currently signed up and will host free court sessions, coaching, mini tennis, cardio tennis and family events to encourage more people, of all ages, playing the game.

As there are limited spaces available advanced booking is recommended at   www.greatbritishtennisweekend.com

James Deem, Regional Participation Manager at Lawn Tennis Association added, “We have an excellent South Somerset Tennis Development Group which is working closely with the tennis clubs across South Somerset to help co-ordinate these weekends.

“You may never have picked up a racket in your life or perhaps your child is looking to try a new sport.  All ability levels are welcome.”
