VINTAGE SCIENTIFIC EQUIPMENT FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTOR IN SHERBORNE TO BE SOLD

A vast range of vintage scientific equipment from a private collector in Sherborne is to be sold by Lawrences of Crewkerne on 6th September 2017Mark Deavin, a former RAF technician who later worked for the Plessey Marine Research Unit, started collecting scientific instruments in the mid-1940s and has since built up an enormous array of items including mineral tubes, Van de Graaf generators and all kinds of specialist electrical measuring devices. TWO RECORD PRICES IN PICTURE AUCTION

Lawrences’ Summer auction of Pictures offered nearly 300 lots spanning seven centuries and a selection of high prices across the board reflected the steady demand for quality and rarity. Some of the highlights included £4270 paid for a small portrait of a seated gentleman by Austrian artist Ludwig Guttenbrunn; £4800 for a fine pencil drawing of Croyland Abbey by John Sell Cotman; and £5600 for a fresh and skilful pastel by Leon L’Hermitte. THE SILK ROADS LEAD TO CREWKERNE

Two outstanding Oriental silk robes added an elegant flourish to a successful sale of vintage and collectable textiles and fashion at Lawrences in Crewkerne on May 15th. A rare Imperial Chinese priest’s robe or `kashaya` dated from the 16th Century and was lavishly embroidered with individualised figures. Full story: Read more
