Council refurbishes two popular play areas

Youngsters in Shepton Mallet and Wells can now enjoy a range of new play equipment after Mendip District Council refurbished two popular play areas.

Wells playgroundThe playgrounds, at Queens Road, Shepton Mallet and Bignal Rand, Wells have had a new, safer play surface laid and a range of exciting new play equipment installed.

At Bignal Rand, the Olympic Rings design has been incorporated into the base of the carousel to reflect the city’s link with Wells Olympian Mary Rand.

At Queens Road, one piece of play equipment for toddlers has been designed as a train, as the play area is situated close to the old train line.

The refurbishment, which was carried out by The Landscape Group, follows improvements to other playgrounds in the district in recent years.

Donna Nolan, Corporate Manager for Governance, Assets and Public Spaces, said: “These two refurbished playgrounds look fantastic and I’m sure the new equipment will prove very popular with the young people who use the areas.”

John Parham, Portfolio Holder for Governance, Assets and Public Spaces, said: “The new play areas are a real improvement and now provide youngsters with an impressive range of new play equipment.

“Both of the playgrounds have been reopened in time for the school summer holidays – now we just need the sun to keep shining!”
