Be aware – Council Tax scam in operation

South Somerset District Council has received notification from a resident that a Council Tax scam email is being sent to some residents in South Somerset.

A concerned resident has alerted the Council to a possible Council Tax scam. They received an e-mail saying they had an unpaid Council Tax bill as a payment hadn’t been processed and asking them to click on a link to update their records.

South Somerset District Council does not send e-mails like this and would not ask you to update any records in this way. Currently the Council issues formal arrears notices by post, and payments can be made on-line via the SSDC website www.southsomerset.gov.uk/online-services.

Councillor Tim Carroll, Portfolio Holder for Finance and Spatial Planning commented, “Council Tax scams arise periodically, and in this case they appear to be asking for information due to a failed payment. It is important that you do not respond to the e-mail or give them any personal details. The Council will always contact you direct if your account falls into arrears.”
