Plans to make £24m in savings and 190 job cuts at Somerset County Council will push staff to “breaking point”, trade union Unison has said. The Conservative-run council is set to debate the draft budget on 6 February. Unison organiser, Oliver Foster-Burnell said: “Front line services which have already been cut are still shrinking or disappearing altogether.” Council leader John Osman has said the council was trying to make cuts where it’s going to cause “least pain”. Plans for an £800,000 artificial hockey pitch on a popular green space could collapse within weeks. The shock admission came from South Somerset District Council assistant director Steve Joel during an inquiry on Tuesday looking at whether a footpath on Yeovil Recreation Ground should be moved to make way for the new sporting facility. The police are being urged to intervene after more than 80% of drivers on a road in Yeovil, Somerset, flouted the speed limit. A speed indicator device on Lyde Road in the town recorded the motorists during an eight-day period in November. Councillors in the area now want the police to enforce the 30mph speed limit on the road. Avon and Somerset Police say they can put mobile speed camera vans in problem areas. Full Story: Read More.
