Latest First World War donation tells the story of two Yeovil War Memorial soldiers

Ernest 'Dyke' LuffmanPhotographs, memorial cards and a letter are the latest First World War items to be donated to South Somerset District Council’s Community Heritage Access Centre (CHAC) in Yeovil. The latest donation contains photographs of two soldiers who are on Yeovil’s War Memorial – Ernest ‘Dyke’ Luffman and Earle Mitchell. Their memorial cards and a letter from Ernest’s sister Mabel to a Mr Bird, trying to find out more about how Ernest died, complete the donation. Full story: Read more

Tessa Munt MP hosts Somerset business breakfast

image001Wells MP Tessa Munt joined over 40 members of the Somerset business community at a recent breakfast event held at Wells Golf Club, organised by the Somerset Chamber of Commerce. Delegates heard Tessa Munt MP speak about her political career to date and explain what her current role entails. She spoke about her strong relationship with Vince Cable, which provides her with an opportunity to take local business issues directly to the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills. First World War activities a hit!

WW1 The 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War was commemorated by South Somerset District Council’s Heritage team recently, by holding children’s activities at Milford Hall and St Peter’s Hall in Yeovil. Participating children really used their imagination to produce ‘trench art’, tanks, a café, love hearts and mementoes like the soldiers would have done in the trenches. Full story: Read more
